Literacy and Learning: A Comprehensive Portfolio

Welcome to my Blue Portfolio! Here, I invite you to join me on a reflective journey through the realms of reading literacy, critical literacy, and social-emotional learning in education.

Reading literacy is the ability to understand and use those written language forms required by society and/or valued by the individual. Readers can construct meaning from texts in a variety of forms (Elley, 1992). They read to learn, to participate in communities of readers in school and everyday life, and for enjoyment (Elley, 1992). Critical literacy is a learning approach where students are expected to examine various texts to understand the relationship between language and the power it can hold  (Top Hat, 2019). Students critically analyze and evaluate the meaning of texts as they relate to topics on equity, power and social justice (Top Hat, 2019). Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is founded on the premise that every child can receive an education that fully supports their learning and development so they can achieve their goals and contribute to their communities (Advancing Social and Emotional Learning - CASEL, 2024).

In my portfolio, I talk about different things I’ve seen and learned while studying in my MA in Education. For each one, I give a quick definition or personal insight. Let’s see how these pieces fit together to create a vibrant learning environment for young children's minds!
